Disclosure is an important issue for companies not only because they may be required by law to do so, but because disclosure is a critical instrument for providing investors with decision-relevant information and thereby influencing a company's market value. This work deals with research in the field of disclosure over the last 20 years and provides an overview of the most important findings. 295 papers from nine journals have been reviewed. It was found that the research does not simply focus on certain aspects of disclosure but tries to understand it in its entirety, from the formulating of the information to its communication medium. Theories from the field of psychology play an important role in understanding the causes and effects of disclosure.
